Palm Beach Region’s Top Rated Public Golf Courses

Wellington Equestrian Realty is fortunate to have a new in-house golf enthusiast!  This past year we welcomed Lindsey Johnston to our staff as Craig Martin’s administrative assistant.  Lindsey has lived in the Palm Beach region for over 2 decades and is a great resource for finding the fun in the Wellington region – she is also an avid golfer!

We’ve decided to kick off a series of articles featuring a variety of extra curricular activities in Palm Beach County, for those who wish to experience all our community has to offer outside the horse show ring.  Our first in this series of articles will please the golfer in the family, as we have taken a close look at our region’s public courses, thanks to the recommendations of Lindsey Johnston!  Please stay tuned to our website – as we also plan to feature a future article focused on private courses in the Wellington vicinity.
North Palm Beach Country Club:

Sandhill Crane:

Sandhill Crane is on North Lake Boulevard, northeast of Wellington in Palm Beach Gardens.  It has a great clubhouse that was just recently renovated, an aqua driving range and a expansive training center.

“Sandhill Crane Golf Club is one of the only golf courses in Florida that winds through natural preserved and wetlands areas. It plays to 6,500 yards through southern pines, palm trees and marsh land, while making defined elevation changes – creating breathtaking views. It’s quality golf, while still being affordable!

“This par 72 course was recently redesigned and renovated by golf architect firm Dusenberry Design in the summer and fall of 2013. With a new irrigation system, Celebration Bermuda fairways and tifeagle greens, the course will become a golf destination for residents and visitors alike.”

Rates range from $25 – $62 per 18 hole round during off rate to prime hours on the weekends.  There’s also fantastic rates for juniors and seasonal pass holders – making this course affordable to all.  There are two certified PGA pros on staff as well.

Okeeheelee Golf Club:

Okeeheelee is just west of Wellington on Forest Hill Boulevard in West Palm Beach, and it’s part of a larger public golf course network managed by Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation.  It has 3, 9-hole courses so your rounds there can be changed up with each visit!  They have 9 male and female instructors on staff, some of which are bilingual, and they offer discounts to juniors.  It is home to the Junior Golf Foundation of America and offers custom golf fittings. They have a large practice facility with a driving range, 30,000 square foot putting green, a pitching green and green side practice bunkers.

“Offering 27 holes of championship golf in a pristine, quiet, park setting, Okeeheelee Golf Course has offered quality golf to Palm Beach County for more than 20 years. The course is set up in three nine-hole courses that can be played in multiple 18-hole combinations, providing the potential for a different golf experience on each visit to the facility. Every hole features five sets of tees, so all skill levels will feel comfortable playing at Okeeheelee.”
Rates are also quite affordable at this club, depending upon the time of day and number of holes.  9 hole rates range from $9-$21.50, 18 hole rates range from $12.71 – $33.64 and they offer a Frequent Pass Card for the practice range, which can be used at the other parks and rec facilities throughout Southern Florida.  They also hold several events such as Family Golf Sunday, Men’s and Women’s leagues as well as Parent/Child scrambles.
As mentioned before, The Okeeheelee Golf Club is managed by Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation – which oversees a group of clubs including Park Ridge (Lake Worth), South Winds and Osprey Point (Top ranked in Boca Raton) and the John Prince Golf Learning Center (Lake Worth).  All these courses are part of the Frequent Pass Card system for those looking for multiple locations to improve their game.
Abacoa Golf Club:
Abacoa Golf Club is located in Jupiter, about 30 minutes North of Wellington. This is a unique golf course in Florida because of its different elevations.

“Abacoa Golf Club is one of the finest public golf courses in South Florida. It was the last course designed by renowned course architect Joe Lee before his death. In typical Joe Lee style, Abacoa’s lakes and bunkers meet its sloping fairways with little obstruction, and you’ll find scenic views with 14 of its 18 holes surrounded by water. All of these features make the tees, greens, and fairways a pure pleasure to play.

“This course is challenging but fair to golfers of all skill and experience levels, and unlike many Florida courses, Abacoa has real elevation changes. The greens are TifEagle grass, and the putting surfaces are of some of the highest quality in Florida. Treat yourself to a round at Abacoa!”

The course also offers similar amenities to the other courses with a fantastic practice facility & learning center, daily golf clinics, a full service clubhouse & pro shop, on-site dining and a popular wedding banquet facility.  Their rates range from $35 – $130 depending upon the time of day and season.
