Their drive and determination showed early on as the twins were WHY WE’RE THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS top performers in every sport they played. But it was competitive rowing where they first made a mark on the national scene. While attending Hobart College, they were two-time National Collegiate Champions. After graduation, the brothers moved to Philadelphia where they trained and competed for the US National & World Championship Team. Prior to the 2000 Olympics, Rob suffered an unfortunate career ending injury and they turned their focus to another passion — restaurants. Rob and Chris created a chain of very successful restaurants throughout Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse, New York, where they honed their exemplary customer service skills. They believe that restaurants were the best training for having an extreme focus on keeping guests happy. After selling their restaurants, they felt as if the horse farm real estate business was the next natural step and chose Ocala because they both had wintered here with their horses. Chris also spearheads the design and build part of their business. The result of that meeting was unanimous, the commissioners were on board and had listened to OHP and the community and they began drafting a resolution against the Coastal Connector. Knowing the resolution was only the start – and knowing this was ultimately a state issue, not a county one – OHP quickly came together with Bernie Little along with many other farm owners to create Horse Farms Forever. Rob, co-founder and vice president of Horse Farms Forever, was instrumental in lobbying the Governor’s office to abandon all routes for the Coastal Connector, while Matt’s previous development experience helped him lobby for proactive and protective solutions. Dear Rob, Chris & Matt, Im sitting here on my Veranda , on this amazing 75 degree day, looking out over the beautiful Horse pastures, and rolling hills dotted with Oaks. It’s the beginning of the Fall/Winter Season in Ocala, and I’m thinking how fortunate I am to live in such an amazing environment. I also reflected on the past year and how Ocala ,and it’s residents came so close to losing this Paradise to a Toll Road.....The Costal Connector. I know I have said Thank you a dozen times, but today I need to say it again. Thank you all for the extraordinary effort you put into stopping what would have have been the destruction of this Paradise. Thank you for the time, the energy and the fight you led to insure our beautiful County stayed in tact and not ripped apart by the Coastal Connector . In November, Horse Farms forever held their Second Annual Conservation Summit, “Conversations about Conservation” at Ocala Breeders’ Sales. OHP were Gold Sponsors of the summit which addressed the balance between growth and preservation of Marion County’s 193,00-acre Farmland Preservation Area. At the top of the agenda, Charlotte Weber was awarded the first annual Acorn Conservation Award. John C. Malone, Liberty media Chairman, businessman, philanthropist and conservationist, was the keynote speaker. Malone is the largest private landowner in North America with more than 2.2 million acres including Ocala’s Bridlewood Farm. “We [Ocala Horse Properties] brought John Malone to Ocala. He was a client of ours originally fromWellingon. He is one of the most impressive people I’ve ever met,” says Matt. “His passion for land and knowledge for conservation is at a completely different level — something we should all strive for. He is a role model.” The major topic of discussion, led by Ocala Metro Chamber and Economic Partnership President and CEO Kevin Sheilley, was the results of the recent Quality of Life Survey which was conducted last summer. “It’s always important to take the pulse of the community and have that perspective in order to make smart decisions,” says Matt. “The survey will help us to look at where the county is growing and where it needs to grow. Ocala is incredibly unique in that it is growing in 2 different ways. On one hand, we are adding diverse industry, housing and jobs - classic urban growth. But also, we have one of the largest regional farmland preservation areas in the country and a thriving equine industry dependent on those farms,” he continues. The survey, organized by Horse Farms Forever and sponsored by Ocala Horse Properties, will help key organizations and leaders understand the needs and desires of Marion County residents and define the issues facing the area. “Marion County can responsibly grow in a lot of different directions. I’m from a family of developers and have seen the effects of shortsighted development. We are unbelievably fortunate to have the Farmland Preservation Area and Urban Growth Area here, and leadership that values them equally,” says Matt. HORSE FARMS FOREVER MISSION Horse Farms Forever ’s mission is to preserve the character and culture that horses, horse farms and the 193,000 acre Farmland Preservation Area (FPA) bring to Marion County. The organization is focused on raising awareness about protecting horse farms and advocating for the protection of the FPA from the threat of unplanned growth and road development. Members of the OHP team have “walked the walk,” opting for preservation over personal profit. Take the recent sale of Chris and Rob’s Hampton Lane farm. Their 180-acre land was originally zoned for 200 half-acre lots. The potential profit from selling off these lots is exponential, to say the least. However, rather than valuing the profit, the Desino’s valued preservation and rezoned the land to keep this beautiful acreage as farmland. And they did this back in 2014 – long before Ocala’s horse country needed to be saved from the Coastal Connector. “This is something we did way ahead of the curve,” said Chris.
